Urban trees realize, and are impacted by, a multitude of environmental challenges –climate extremes, alien pests, and human impacts. Panelists will share current tree health trends realized from their daily work in the field followed by an overview of contemporary canopy and ornamental tree selections appropriate for enduring the rigors and design challenges associated with lower Midwest landscapes.
Presentation learning objectives:
Understand the elements of existing site conditions and necessary resources beyond the information provided by a typical tree inventory to assist with accurate pre‐design site analysis..
Explore the forces working against the health of the urban forest, such as climate extremes, pests and site drainage.
Learn about contemporary tough tree selections for urban sites, including an overview of selecting adaptive native and nativars v.s. non‐invasive introduced species and cultivars.
Understand the importance and critical elements of tree installation and post‐planting inspection, including proper planting depth, staking, irrigation application and retention systems, pruning, and mulching.
